“Maui” is a demigod in the mythology of the Maori people of New Zealand, admired and famous for his spectacular heroic deeds and cunning. He defeated the sun and stole fire for the people. The Hawaiian island of Maui is named after him. After being thrown into the sea by his mother, wrapped in her hair, he was found by sea spirits who wrapped him in seaweed. Maui’s divine ancestor, Rangi, the heavenly father, took care of the child and raised him in the sky until his youth.”
